Currently, Indigenous rights and self-determination are being violated worldwide. Privatization of land, resources and raw materials is further marginalizing Indigenous peoples. The result is a global climate and environmental catastrophe. That is why it is important that Indigenous voices are heard, they are our knowledge carriers. In the first episode of the Indigenous liberation triptych, we talk about the Right to Self-Determination. How can we strengthen the right to self-determination of Indigenous peoples from the Netherlands?

These portraits were produced in 2020 in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger.

Brian Hukom: “Bescherm ons oerwoud”

More about the video

In this video we follow climate activist Brian Hukom. He is tirelessly committed to the fight for Indigenous rights in the Moluccas. “In the current climate debate, we in the West look too much at local solutions, while the real problems are outside the Netherlands.” The story of Sabuai, a village in South-West Ceram, is central to him for how unjust the climate actually is: The people who contribute the least to the problems are often the biggest victims of it. “Protect our rainforest” shows that we have to look beyond our borders to combat climate change.
