Protests | Archive
Racism against Indigenous people is often marked by the denial of Indigenous existence. Indigenous people are imagined in the past and far away. Hence protesting and making ourselves and our struggles visible is a vital part of building a movement for Indigenous liberation. Here in the Netherlands, the marches have also functioned as a place to connect with other Indigenous people and allies. Indigenous people can be all shades of skin color and you can not tell from looking at a person if they are (mixed) Indigenous in their identity. The marches were marked by ceremony, grievances (over open wounds of colonialism) and joy (over connecting with other Indigenous people and allies). Our existence is resistance. Our protests were a public place of pride and community-building.
